Many citizens groups got together in mid-December, 2023 to brainstorm on what we as citizens need to do to prevent future floods. A network of local residents groups called `The Citizen’s Platform’ – Makkal Medai – had been formed in 2015 which worked for over a year and came out with a detailed concept note which pointed out that flood prevention in Chennai city and surrounding areas cannot be seen in isolation but has to be understood as being integrally linked with the nature and type of urban planning and infrastructure development, industrial growth, environmental protection and pollution control measures. People are slowly realizing that they are not just victims – but part of the problem itself. And that no solution can be found unless people are also involved in the solutions! It was therefore decided to revive the `Citizen’s Platform’ and once again resume the process of building a city-wide initiative bringing together concerned citizens, resident welfare associations, people’s representatives and officials.
